6 bedrooms / 10 bathrooms
11,000 Sq. Ft.
Okay, okay, I don’t usually write about homes listed above $10 million, let alone $20 million, but when a house as jaw dropping and historically significant as the Cecil B. DeMille Estate pops up, we all should take a moment to appreciate it. To fawn over it, really.
Cecil B DeMille is, of course, the legendary Hollywood filmmaker of classics like The Greatest Show on Earth and The Ten Commandments. And you may also know his name from Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard when Norma Desmond says directly to the camera in the film’s closing line, “Alright Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” DeMille essentially represents all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s golden age. As does his house!
The six bedroom, ten bathroom house sits on 2.1 elevated acres in the gated Laughlin Park area of Los Feliz. The Beaux Arts style mansion was built in 1913 and was DeMille’s longtime family residence.
The home and its grounds have since undergone a six year (six years!) renovation. Once you enter you immediately notice all the swoon-worthy details, including this grand staircase.
A six-year renovation/restoration sensitive to original details yet including modern amenities has created a high-quality sophisticated environment rarely seen.
11,000 square feet of living space. Several living rooms, French doors all over the place, hardwood floors, soaring ceilings, and amazing natural light fill the home.
A very formal and large living room.
An incredible library for book lovers.
The lovely kitchen features a huge center island, a beautiful vintage stove and oven, and newer amenities like a stainless steel dishwasher and refrigerator. A more casual dining room sits just off the kitchen and has incredible views of the grounds below.
The seriously spacious master bedroom had two pairs of French doors leading out to a private terrace.
All ten bathrooms in the home are gorgeous, but the master bath is particularly appealing. All have been expertly restored with a sensitivity to the home’s original vintage charm.
The home’s grounds are filled with incredible gardens, paths, and sitting areas. The estate is gated and walls so owners can expect complete privacy.
The 40-foot-long pool is surrounded by rolling lawns and rose gardens and boasts arched fountains.
There’s also a pool house and gym, plus a studio house with a separate entrance. And did you notice the Griffith Observatory in the picture above? Yes, as if the compound wasn’t perfect enough already, it also has glorious views of the Griffith Observatory.
Yeah, yeah, I know, it might be a bit out of our price range to say the least, but one can dream, right? 2000 De Mille Drive, an Old Hollywood classic.
