It’s not every day you come across a Geodesic Dome Home in Los Angeles anymore. Or anywhere for that matter. Geodesic domes first came to popularity post World War II but really started taking off as private residences in the late 60s and early 70s.

This geodesic dome home was designed by Los Angeles architect William King in 1982. It has been christened, “Domestead,” and for the past decade or two, the unique property has been owned by garden proselytizer and artist Fritz Haeg, who turned it into an artist’s hub for projects that were explored in a monthly series known as the Sundown Salons.
What sets this wildly one-of-a-kind geodesic dome home is that it contains three separate levels, and each of them are incredibly distinct. In the “earth-sheltered” first level there is a living room and lounge with poured concrete walls that exude a cave-like vibe.
There’s also a skylit sleep chamber, and laundry and storage area. Recent updates to this level include new terrazzo tile and sisal carpeting.
A steel spiral staircase leads up to the timber-framed kitchen with wraparound windows, cork-sheathed walls, built-in seating, and high-end appliances.
I mean, just look at this beautifully handsome wood. Absolutely stunning.
The second floor has a dreamy half bath with redwood ceiling beams and a length of shellacked timber wood that has been repurposed into a sink. This level also has outdoor acress.
That spiral staircase continues to the third level, where you will find the aforementioned geodesic dome. The dome features triangular skylights and windows, built-in shelving, and panels painted in various shades of blue.
This third level is surrounded by a wraparound deck that showcases jaw-dropping views of the city skyline, the Glassell Park hillside, and stretch all the way out to the San Gabriel Mountains.
This level also contains the home’s full bath.
And a dedicated office area making it an inspiring and convenient space to work from home.
The property itself has a wide variety of fruit trees, California native plants, and an array of succulents. As you can see, the land is already primed for al fresco dinner parties and, I hope, whomever the lucky next owner is will continue the salons, or create an artistic community all their own.
There’s also an outdoor shower and soaking tub, plus a large domed yurt on a wood platform.
You’ll love exploring the natural pathways scattered throughout. The adjoining buildable lot at APN#5462-002-032 is included in the sale. So the opportunity to create your magical and one-of-a-kind compound in the city’s best up and coming neighborhood has just exponentially become more enticing. Let’s go see Domestead together!
