6881 Alta Loma Terrace | $998,000 | 3 Bed | 3 Baths | 2,458 Sq. Ft. | 0.17 Acres
The year was 1992. And Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love ruled the airwaves.
Together, the lead singers behind Nirvana and Hole, moved into this charming Asian-influenced Craftsman in the iconic Hollywood Heights neighborhood, literally just a stone’s throw from the Hollywood Bowl.
It wouldn’t be too long before Kurt and Courtney had their first and own child while living in this house.
Built in 1921, this house is full of original character and unique details. The dramatic two story living room has a regal open staircase and four oversized french doors leading to a viewing deck that offers vistas of the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument and the Griffith Observatory.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms and one bathroom; all with a bird’s eye view of Hollywood.
Venture out to the lush and terraced side yard for fruit trees, entertaining spaces, and canyon views.
Head to the lower level one bed / one bath apartment; which begs to be reimagined into an art or recording studio.
Not accessible by car, the property is part of the legendary High Tower Elevator Association. The five-story tower, a short walk from the Hollywood Bowl, went up around a century ago, to spare the residents of this notoriously hilly enclave from huffing and puffing their way to their doors. It’s modeled after Italian campaniles, or freestanding bell towers, and offers an easy path skyward, with an incredible view of downtown L.A. There are also two walking paths that lead to the house.
The home comes with a key to the historic elevator and a dedicated parking garage on High Tower Drive. These keys are notoriously difficult to come by for Angelenos.
The property has fallen into disrepair and is a major fixer. It will not qualify for traditional financing.
Kurt and Courtney weren’t the only notable residents of 6881 Alta Loma Terrace. Philip Ahn (born Pil Lip Ahn (안필립) was an American actor and activist of Korean descent. Ahn was the very first child to be born in the US to two Korean parents. Ahn became a seminal figure in Asian American and Korean American representation in Hollywood. He also has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Pretty cool.
The property is also located in good company, with the Los Angeles Historical Landmark just next door, the B.A.G. Fuller Residence. Architect Ralph C. Flewelling designed that home in 1933 for distinguished author and philosopher Benjamin Apthorp Gould Fuller. It sold only a few years ago for close to $2 Million.
