I love this architect. Harry Gesner is one of the great Los Angeles mid-century architects. A bit lesser known than his peers perhaps, but he is one of our city’s finest master architects and I hope to do one of my Iconic LA features taking a closer look at his life and work soon. Meanwhile, enjoy a tour of one of his wonderful “boathouses” in the Hollywood Hills.
7031 Woodrow Wilson Drive is one of five homes designed by Gesner in 1959 that were designed to perfectly take advantage of the steep hillside slope in the Cahuenga Pass neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills. One common misconception on this row of houses is that they are all exactly the same. It’s not true: each of the five homes all vary in style and size, each with their own unique quirks and idiosyncrasies.
Inside, you will find natural light that floods the open living space, a vaulted cathedral ceiling with exposed wooden beams, and a wood-burning fireplace.
You will love this cozy napping/reading nook with its skylight.
Plus this fireplace gives the boathouse a cabin in the woods-esque vibe.
The home packs a lot of distinct spaces into its open floorplan, with room for a den, dining, and office areas.
Rows of windows are set into the angled roof, exposing unobstructed views of the canyons below.
Imagine the sunsets enjoyed on this ideal viewing deck.
The kitchen is directly to the left as you enter the front door. The skylight helps open up the prep area and sloped roof adds a layer of distinction to the charming setting.
Tucked downstairs is the master bedroom. The master features exposed beams and a slanted wall of windows that reveals peaceful views of the trees and hillside. The master also contains ample closet space.
Also downstairs is a a guest bedroom perfect for overnight visitors, a roommate, or as a nursery.
And, last but not least, there’s an updated bathroom with custom tiling and new fixtures.
7031 Woodrow Wilson Drive has been completely updated with new bamboo floors throughout, new drywall and structural beams, newly constructed deck, new electrical panel, new roof, and added bonus studio space.
The home is also in an ideal location close to some of LA’s best dining and nightlife options as well as film studios, and just minutes from Runyon Canyon. The home is a master class in site specific architecture and an iconic addition to Los Angeles’s mid-century modern design.
