Who wouldn’t love your job when touring houses like this masterpiece is part of the job description? I tour and fall in love with plenty of houses, but it’s not every day a Los Angeles historic-cultural monument hits the market and you’re invited inside. Despite the fact that this is a house you’ll never forget, I had to snap a photo for my collection.
The Samuel-Novarro residence was built in 1928 by Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright, of course) for Louis Samuel, the personal assistant of silent film icon Ramon Novarro. Novarro later moved into the house. Later Hollywood actress and noted preservationist Diane Keaton added her personal touch to the house.
The Mayan-inspired Art Deco home has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, landscaped gardens, expansive entertaining terraces, and a swimmers pool.
Inside you’ll find an immaculate open layout space, including several living areas with large glass windows and French doors leading outside.
A formal dining area opens out to a lush covered terrace.
Perfect for creating that sense of Southern California indoor/outdoor living.
The kitchen has been loving restored and now boasts marble counters and backsplash, stainless steel appliances, custom cabinetry, and a gorgeous hillside view.
The private master suite has floor to ceiling doors leading out to an enclosed terrace and a spacious sitting area.
Two more bedrooms and three stylish bathrooms complete the home. Upstairs you’ll find a terrace overlooking the Los Feliz hills treetops.
And downstairs the majestic and enclosed pool area. Imagine taking a dip or having a late night soiree and not having to worry about nosy neighbors.
The home has retained Lloyd Wright’s signatures throughout including the oxidized copper ornamentation on the exterior. The photos don’t do the beautiful turquoise hue of the copper justice.
Surrounded by lush vegetation and jutting trees the home seems to belong on the hillside where it’s set.
And who could resist the lure of the impressive and oversized street number out front? Perhaps the best thing about the Samuel-Novarro house, besides its Hollywood history, is its tranquil and calming seclusion.
