Sometimes I go hiking in Griffith Park. Well, that’s what I tell my friends, at least. What I’m really doing is hiking through the residential streets of Griffith Park, North of Los Feliz Boulevard. Sure, eventually I make it into the actual park, but I take my time as I make my way upward, enjoying all the architectural gems and modern masterpieces that line the quiet and treelined streets. House to house, the styles vary, from mid-century moderns to east coast traditionals, Spanish colonials to American craftsmans. When 2618 N Commonwealth came onto the market I recognized it immediately from one of my walks. The reason? Because from the street you cannot get a good look at it.
So I was very excited for the opportunity to actually see the home behind the lush and abundant greenery. Up a meandering path, the home is tucked relaxingly away from the street, creating a sense of removal and privacy.
This Spanish-style home was built in 1930 giving it the feeling of Old Hollywood era glamour and sophistication. Though the house has been retrofitted with all the finest modern upgrades and amenities, it has retained authentic period details throughout. The grand living area features hardwood floors, a stately fireplace, wood beamed ceilings, and several arched French doors with black iron hardware leading to the terrace.
From the living room and through the impressive foyer, the step down dining room boasts a beautiful coffered ceiling and three more sets of arched French doors to the terrace. Imagine opening the doors and letting in the park breeze on a warm summer evening.
The spacious kitchen has dual sinks, custom cabinetry, a subzero refrigerator, a unique vintage stove, and a charming breakfast area.
Off the kitchen there is a a laundry, a full bath, and a third bedroom. In the middle of the home is a rare tower that jettisons up three stories flooding the house with bright light.
Upstairs through the tower the second level awaits. A casual family room and library with a second fireplace is perfect for informal lounging and relaxation. The second level also has a hall bath and areas for an office or home gym.
The spacious first bedroom on the second level has a private patio with canyon and city views.
The large master suite also has a private patio through three sets of doors letting in a lot of sunlight. As you may have guessed by now, most of the rooms offer access to patios and terraces.
The master bath is an exquisite reimagining of vintage charm. A stand up shower, a tiled tub, a huge counter with double vanity, ample storage space, and – count them – not one, but seven windows.
The rooftop terrace is a calming and peaceful refuge from the city, surrounded by the treetops of the greenery below.
Outside, there are fountains, shade trees, several areas for entertaining, summer night barbecues, and celebratory gathering. Just a few doors down from the entrance to Griffith Park, 2618 Commonwealth is an original and luxurious estate in Los Feliz. You should see it, and you can’t do that from the street.
