Mount Washington’s Pilot House didn’t get it’s name from its super sleek design which resembles a mid-century control deck. No, it got it’s name from being a pilot project for famed architects A. Quincy Jones and Whitney Smith. Jones and Smith were working with Mutual Housing Association and were in the planning stages of Brentwood’s Modern architecture community, Crestwood Hills when they built this home. They built this “Pilot” house in Mount Washington to show how “well-designed homes could be built on steep hillside lots.”
Built in 1948, The Pilot House joined the ranks of LA’s best architecture and was designated a Historic Cultural Monument in 2002.
Inside this post and beam are beautiful, famous angled windows that offer stunning views of the mountain vistas. Original Douglas Fir floors abound and the high ceilings stretch wide and feature gorgeous wall-to-wall wood beams.
Facing almost due South the home is not only gorgeous but is passively solar and when it was built it was on the forefront of energy conservation.
The updated chef’s kitchen has stainless steel appliances, a large sink, bright lighting, and a lovely view.
Both bedrooms feel like secluded retreats and open up to private patios.
The expansive home also has a unique office space.
Outdoor spaces include several stunning patio areas with lush greenery set right against the hillside.
A view from above. Look at that salt water pool! This home is a Mid Century masterpiece, one of the few left in Los Angeles.
